Getting the entire family prepped for a holiday photoshoot is not always an easy task. I quickly realized this when my family attempted to take group photos this past Thanksgiving. When there's twenty people trying to squeeze into the frame of the photo, things don't always go as smoothly as planned. Regardless of how challenging it is to get everyone together on time, looking in the same direction, and not talking for a few minutes, those photos are always my favorite and I plan to do it again when we're all together for Christmas. This time I'm going to be a little more prepared by following these tips on how to prep the family for a holiday photo shoot.
Use a Tripod - If you're trying to take your own family photos and don't have a designated photographer, you may want to invest in a tripod. Otherwise someone is going to be left out of the picture as the designated camera man, or worse, you'll have to use a makeshift tripod with a smartphone timer and the quality won't be ideal.
Use Bribing Tactics - Photoshoots with young kids can be tricky, but there are ways to get them to cooperate long enough until the pictures are done. A promise to do something fun they've been looking forward to usually works. This will keep them on their best behavior knowing it's their time after the photos.
Give Yourself Enough Time - If you've hired a photographer, make sure you allow enough time for everyone to get ready before the scheduled shoot. Photographers work on tight schedules, especially during Christmas time, and they may not be able to postpone your shoot if half of the family is running late.
Don't Go Hungry - We all know what happens when we're hungry. We get cranky and impatient. Depending on how large your family is, photoshoots can be time consuming, so don't plan the shoot during lunch or dinner time unless you're willing to wait.
Plan Your Look - If you want everyone to wear coordinating outfits, start planning ahead to give everyone time to get their outfits together. The same goes for hair and makeup. If you want to get fancy with professionally done makeup and hair, you may want to give yourself an extra hour incase the salons are running behind. For your smile, bright teeth are never a bad idea!
